hw #3-5 Story Problems

The TREMENDOUS CHALLENGE in this assignment is to NOT SIMPLY ANSWER the questions.  In each of the "story problem" questions, you are being asked to SET UP AN ALGEBRAIC EQUATION which can then be solved.  Your initial reaction may be: "Well gosh Mr. Chamberlain, I'm really really smart, so I don't NEED to set up an algebraic equation."  "Well, woop-de-do for you," I say.  Your taking an algebra class now, and this is one way for us to begin learning algebra.

SO, RESIST THE TEMPTATION TO JUST START DOING SOME MATH AND SOLVING EACH PROBLEM.  CHALLENGE YOURSELF TO SET UP AN ALGEBRAIC EQUATION.

CA-PEESH??!!

The easiest first step is to figure out what it is that you DON'T KNOW, and assign a variable to it.  Then, go from there. Read the suggestions in the FYI of the Problem Set Document.
