EASY, right?) but I'd like for you to see that "Complete the Square" will always work. After next class, you will see that the Quadratic Formula (aka "The Quadranator") always works as well. I expect at this point you are beginning to understand how to look at quadratic equations with an arsenal of algebraic tools at your disposal.

See the mathchamber website In each of the "story problem" questions, you are being asked to SET UP AN ALGEBRAIC EQUATION which can then be solved. Your initial reaction may be: "Well gosh Mr. Chamberlain, I'm really really smart, so I don't NEED to set up an algebraic equation." "Well, woop-de-do for you," I say. Your taking an algebra class now, and this is one way for us to begin learning algebra.

SO, RESIST THE TEMPTATION TO JUST START DOING SOME MATH AND SOLVING EACH PROBLEM. CHALLENGE YOURSELF TO SET UP AN ALGEBRAIC EQUATION.

CA-PEESH??!!

The easiest first step is to figure out what it is that you DON'T KNOW, and assign a variable to it.
